What is Cellulite and how it forms?

We can all tell that cellulite is maybe the worst nightmare of a woman (and sometimes of a man). The more ''brave'' women do not have a problem with it, but for most of us it is causing a lot of problems in our daily life. Some may not enjoy a trip to the beach, others may be afraid to wear what they want, or they feel ashamed by their appearance. However, there is one thing you have to keep in mind: Cellulite is completely normal! But do you know exactly what is it and how it develops? Let's clear this up together...

 What is cellulite?

Cellulite is not a medical condition and as many believe, it is not fat and it is not caused because you are ''fat”. Cellulite is caused when the connective tissue (the tissue that separates your skin and muscles) tether the skin to the underlying muscle and fat lies between them. The fat cells accumulate and become bigger and push against the skin while the connective tissue is pushing down. This creates the orange-peel look known as cellulite. So probably now you can understand that cellulite is something normal and it can happen to anyone, although men are a little bit luckier (as always!) and it is rare.

How it develops?

It is not fully clear yet what causes cellulite. Some believe that it is caused only by bad diet and not being active, but scientists have discovered that it is a complex of genetics, sex, lifestyle, hormonal and structural changes. As you grow, your skin becomes thinner due to reduce of collagen production and sun damage and can lead also to the appearance of cellulite. This means that you may already have cellulite, but it is not visible. In that way, some people with thicker skin are less prone to the orange-peel look. Also, females store fat in columns like a mattress and as the skin thickens by aging, the fat is pushed to the skin surface. On the other hand, males store fat in a different manner. This is the reason why it is not that common to see a man with cellulite issues and it is more likely to appear in men with hormonal problems.

It is very important to point out that cellulite has nothing to do with the weight of a person. There are many professional athletes that follow the ''perfect'' lifestyle but still have cellulite.
